According to the Indian Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways publication, there are 12 major ports in India. These ports are considered major in India based on cargo load. These major ports are equally distributed along the country’s eastern and western coasts.
Growth Trend In Cargo Handled By Major Indian Ports: 2015-16 to 2024-25

In the last decade, India has seen an astounding 70% increase in cargo handling, with the figures in 605.89 million tonnes in 2015 going to 853.57 in 2024. The trend shows a continuous increase every year except for 2020 due to the COVID-19 impact.
