What is Kumbh Mela (Fair) Explained?

Kumbh Mela is one of the oldest gatherings in the world. It is also one of the largest. Its roots are deeply embedded in Indian culture. Scriptures like Bhagavat Puran, Vishnu Puran, Mahabharat, Ramayan, Padma Puran have mentions of this event.

The Kumbh Mela is linked to the exercise of ‘Samudra Manthan’ (churning of the ocean). The Deities (Devas) and Demons (Asuras) performed this activity to retrieve valuable items from the ocean. During that, a pot (Kumbh) filled with nectar of immortality (Amrit) emerged. A struggle began between the two groups to obtain this pot. During the struggle , few drops of the nectar fell from the pot. These drops spilled at four locations on earth: Prayagraj, Haridwar, Ujjain, and Nasik. According to tradition, these sites became sacred and Kumbh Mela is held at these places.

Each site hosts the fairs on the basis of specific planetary alignments.

  • Magh Mela: An annual fair happens at Prayagraj which is a smaller version of Kumbh.
  • Ardha Kumbh Mela: It takes place in every 6 years in Prayagraj and Haridwar.
  • Maha Kumbh Mela: It takes place in 12 years at each site

Xuan Zang (Hiuen Tsang), a Chinese traveler, provides the earliest mention of Kumbh Mela in modern history. He visited India in the seventh century during the reign of King Harshavardhana. He described it as grand religious fair held at Prayagraj. After that Abul Fazl’s writings in Mughal era and British colonial records give more structured records of the event.
