In 2024, diabetes remains a major global health challenge, especially among adults aged between 20 and 79 years. Over 588 million adults have diabetes globally. This is around 11% of the total world population in this age. The diabetic population in 2050 is expected to grow dramatically, estimated to be around 852 million. In number terms, around 260 million extra patients will be there in 2050. This would be around 13% of total of world population in this age. This would be largely driven by population growth, aging, urbanization and sedentary lifestyle.

Major Countries with Diabetic Population
- China: China is leading country in overall diabetic population. In 2050 the diabetic population is projected to be around 168 million from 148 million in 2024. The growth rate of the diabetic population is getting slower. However, it is still projected to be the largest country with diabetic patients in 2050.
- India: India’s diabetes burden is expected to increase significantly. It is projected to rise by around 75%. The number of cases will grow from 90 million in 2024 to 157 million in 2050.India is expected to come closer to China in diabetic patients due to younger and growing population.
- USA: The USA is expected to witness a moderate rise from 39 million to 43 million by 2050. This indicates better disease management and prevention efforts.
- Pakistan: Pakistan diabetes population is expected to get double in 2050 from 2024. This is largely attributed to limited health care access, poor screening and high obesity rates.

Countries like Indonesia will see an increase in diabetic populations from 20 million to 29 million. Brazil will increase from 17 million to 24 million. Bangladesh will grow from 14 million to 23 million. Mexico will increase from 14 million to 20 million. Egypt will see growth from 13 million to 25 million. These countries are the other major contributors to the global diabetic population.
