Indian Electric Mobility Index -2024
India Electric Mobility Index (IEMI) uses open datasets and government datasets. It captures the rapid changes in the fast-evolving electric ecosystem in India. IEMI is the first national level e-mobility index provided by Niti Ayog. It provides a comparative and ongoing evaluation of e-mobility development in Indian states.
IEMI (Indian Electric Mobility Index) Methodology
IEMI provides a standardized score out of 100 for each state based on performance in three core areas, each of this categories do have further sub categories:
- Transport Electrification: This is given 50% weightage in the index and is around the number of electric vehicles being registered
- Charging Infrastructure: An important aspect is the charging infrastructure being developed in the state. It has a weightage of around 30%
- EV Research & Innovation: This is a very dynamic and progressing domain. Innovation and research hold significant potential. This has a 20% weightage in the index calculations.
State & UT performance for Indian Electric Mobility Index : 2024

This helps in tracking the electric mobility trends in Indian States. Delhi tops the list followed by Maharashtra and Chandigarh. States play an important role in transition to electricity vehicles. Initiatives like this will lay the groundwork to motivate and measure states progress on an annual basis.
Environmental Significance of Transition to Electric Vehicle
Electric mobility plays a crucial role in de-carbonize India’s transport sector. India electric mobility sector has undergone a significant transformation over the past decade from 0.5% of total vehicle sales in 2018 to 7.7% of new vehicle sales in 2024 with over 6.5 million EV operating on Indian roads as on June 2025. As of October 2024, India had 25000 public EV charging stations.
